Discovering Implication in Real Time
with Rachel Kabasakalian McKay, PhD & David Mark, PhD
We review the social and clinical relevance of Rothberg’s concept of "the implicated subject", and then introduce the idea of "intersubjective implication". We define this idea, anchoring it within a relational clinical sensibility, and suggest that the discovery of one's implication in moment to moment engagement with one's partner in the consulting room represents a powerful, and central part of the work.
Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of the program, participants will be able to:
1) Describe Rothberg's concept of social implication and its relevance to the current political crisis
2) List one clinical example of how our professional implication may make it more difficult to inhabit our personal, intersubjective implication
Level of Instruction:
this event will be taught at the intermediate level of instruction and is appropriate for practicing clinicians

Presenter Information
Rachel Kabasakalian-McKay, Ph.D., Ed.M. is a clinical psychologist and psychoanalyst, and co-editor, with David Mark, of Inhabiting Implication in Racial Oppression and in Relational Psychoanalysis (2023, Routledge). She is on the faculty of the New York University Postdoctoral Program in Psychotherapy and Psychoanalysis and of the Mitchell Relational Studies Center, and is a founding board member, Co-Director emerita, and faculty of the Institute for Relational Psychoanalysis of Philadelphia. Additionally, she teaches and supervises at NIP and ICP-NY. She has written on implication; empathy and recognition; the expansion of maternal subjectivity and thus enriched potential space made possible by Jessica Benjamin’s theory; and, with David Mark, the importance of the “intersubjective real”. She is in practice in Philadelphia and New York, and serves as an associate editor of Psychoanalytic Dialogues.
David Mark, Ph.D. is faculty and director emeritus of The Institute for Relational Psychoanalysis of Philadelphia (IRPP). He is on the faculty of the NYU postdoctoral program of psychotherapy and psychoanalysis. Among other work, in 1997, he co-authored with Jeffrey Faude, Ph.D., The Psychotherapy of Cocaine Addiction: Entering the Interpersonal World of the Cocaine Addict published by Jason Aronson. In 2023, with Rachel Kabasakalian-McKay, Ph.D., he was co-editor of Inhabiting Implication in Racial Oppression and in Relational Psychoanalysis.
